Last spring I hosted a producer’s round table discussion about drum recording for Drum magazine. The feature article, written by Glen Caruba, is in the July 2009 edition (with Chad Smith on the cover). Richard Dodd, Reid Shippen, Denny Jiosa and myself answered Glen’s questions about our drum session experiences, recording techniques and trade secrets.

If you have the chance to see it, it’s a fun read. Along with the brilliance of Richard, Reid and Denny, Glen really captured the spirit of the discussion (including us frequently interrupting each other) here at my studio. Check it out!

Each week, I get dozens of emails from people who are starting a career as an audio engineer.  Most have just finished a school program and are looking for entry level jobs or internships; some haven’t gone to school and are just looking for an opportunity to be in a studio and learn what they can.  Here are some thoughts on making that first step painless and successful.

Mixing for BnK and Carl Douglas

Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting. Literally everybody. In 1974, Jamaican singer and songwriter Carl Douglas had a world-wide number one hit with “Kung Fu fighting”. He went on to record several other albums as an artist as well as writing music for film and television.

I just finished mixing several songs for Carl’s newest release with other songs being done by my friend and colleague Richard Dodd.  Among his incredible list of credits, Richard engineered “Kung Fu Fighting” as well as many other songs with Carl.  This record has a cool blend of the old and new; contemporary grooves and hip hop influenced tracks mixed with Carl’s deep disco influences. With appearances by Sly and Robbie, Johnny Guitar Watson, Billy Preston, Jackie Mittoo and many others… well, you have to hear it for yourself. I’ll let you know when it’s out.

I’m currently mixing the new release from spanish pop stars Boni and Kelly (BnK). These tracks, produced by Jose Miguel Velasquez, are smokin! Jose Miguel is one of those great producers who brings you tracks that sound like a record; great songs, great vocals, great musicians… what a pleasure. With the producer in Miami and the artists in Madrid we are using the Radio Page to it’s fullest!

Matt Belsante and More

Well, since it’s been 4 months since my last confession…

I’ve finished mixing “RENT” for MTI.

I mixed some songs for Country/Rock/Pop artist Rebecca Lynn Howard’s new release.

Producer/ Über Drummer Lee Levin came up from Miami with co-producers Dan Warner and Tommy Torres to record overdubs here with bassist Michael Rhodes for Tommy’s new release, Tarde O Temprano.

Joey Miskulin (Riders in the Sky) was in producing some songs for a new ride at Disney’s California Adventure… featuring Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head! We tracked and mixed the 3 song project here at My Space Recording.

Singer Matt Belsante returned for his sophomore release on the GreenHills label. The new record was arranged, orchestrated and produced by Chris McDonald. It’s a great record with some serious big band writing and playing by all involved. The album was mastered by Richard Dodd.

Last week I recorded the score for “Beauty and the Beast” for Disney theatrical. I headed out to Sound Kitchen with assistants Steve Beers and Mikey Alred to work with a 30 piece orchestra for the job. David Weinstein came down from NYC to conduct and co-produce the sessions.

Finally… the Schematics Vault is up and functioning. This is a library of almost 1000 pro audio schematics and mods all formatted as multi-page pdf. It is offered as a community research tool, so PLEASE email me if you’d like to contribute to the library.
